BEETHOVEN MASS IN C

Our November concert features Ludwig van Beethoven’s dramatic Mass in C major.  The only other mass setting by Beethoven besides the Missa solemnis, the Mass in C was composed for the Esterházy court at Eisenstadt, where Joseph Haydn, Beethoven’s teacher, served as court composer for many years.  We will also perform three rarely heard works by Haydn: the festive choral hymns Ens aeternum and O Jesu, te invocamus and a gorgeous Salve regina in E major for soprano, chorus, and strings.

DURUFLÉ REQUIEM

In March, we will present Maurice Duruflé’s beautiful Requiem along with other French music for choir and organ: Marcel Dupré’s O salutaris, Francis Poulenc’s Salve regina, Olivier Messiaen’s O sacrum convivium!, Duruflé’s Ubi caritas, and Charles-Marie Widor’s Surrexit a mortuis.  The concert features organist Ross Wood, formerly Associate Organist and Choirmaster at the Church of the Advent.

BACH MAGNIFICAT

Our May concert is an all-Bach program featuring the glorious Magnificat, the secular cantata Tönet, ihr Pauken! Erschallet, Trompeten!, the music of which was later incorporated into the Christmas Oratorio, and two other motets.  We will be accompanied by a period orchestra of some of the best Baroque instrumentalists in Boston, including trumpeter Jesse Levine.
