Dr. Kevin Leong has been selected as the new Music Director to lead Masterworks Chorale into the future. Kevin Leong has been Music Director of the Concord Chorus since 2012. He previously served as Associate Conductor of the Harvard-Radcliffe Choruses at Harvard University, where he directed the Harvard-Radcliffe Chorus and, with Jameson Marvin, co-conducted the Harvard Glee Club, the Radcliffe Choral Society, and the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum. Dr. Leong earned a doctoral degree in Choral Conducting from Boston University, where he studied with Ann Howard Jones, David Hoose, Jeremy Yudkin, and Craig Smith. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in choral conducting and choral literature at Harvard and Boston University and has won several teaching awards. Dr. Leong performs as a tenor with various choral ensembles in the Boston area.
Kevin Leong succeeds Steven Karidoyanes who led Masterworks for 10 years, ending in the 76th season. “This is an exciting time for us,” says Jeff Walker, Chorale Board President and chair of the conductor search committee. “Kevin’s approach to artistic direction made him a clear favorite of the Chorale as well as the audience. He chose excellent and engaging repertoire, employed a solid and rigorous conducting technique and rehearsed the Chorale effectively and efficiently.
“The combination of a talented membership, high-quality music-making, a strong emphasis on community outreach, and a venerable history is what excites me about Masterworks Chorale,” says new Music Director Kevin Leong. “The professionalism of Masterworks Chorale’s singers allows for the ability to perform choral works from any genre and therefore the potential to generate the broadest range of artistic statements, from the grandest to the most intimate.”
The program for Masterworks Chorale’s 78 th season’s 3-concert series at Harvard University’s Sanders Theatre will be announced later this summer. In addition, Masterworks Chorale will continue its outreach initiative, Awareness Through Music, in this next season. This program promotes the importance of local charities by matching them to Chorale performances, using Chorale resources to promote both together. It also includes specially designed interaction between the organizations. Next season’s community partner is Horizons for Homeless Children, an Awareness charity partner since 2008.
